Luxury Drip: 8 Rappers Who Love Wearing Celine

Hip-Hop loves a logo! From double GGs and LVs to interlocking CCs and Zucca patterns, clothes that say it with prints have the culture's stamp of approval, and rightfully so. In the late 80s and early 90s, when the European fashion houses didn't design flashy tracksuits and balloon sleeved coats, designer Dapper Dan updated luxury brands' traditional designs into urbanized garments that play right into rich aunt and uncle vibes. Before a raid on his Harlem showroom took the designer out of business, clients of Dapper Dan's earlier creations included rappers LL Cool J, Roxanne Shante and Eric B and Rakim.

Today majority of luxury brands have mastered the art of logomania. Christian Dior, Balenciaga, every fashion house has garments covered in the brand's logo. Not all brands have a logo obsession in mind. For every hypebeast that follows the craze, there's a clan of fashion mavericks who crave for the opposite. Minimal, clean, modern branding that doesn't become a blur, and some brands have perfected that aesthetic as well, introducing french luxury brand Celine.

Founded in 1945 by Richard and Céline Vipiana, Celine started as a made-to-measure children's shoe store. It wasn't until 1960 when the brand revamped to a women's prêt-à-porter line of sportswear debuting first and women's shoes and fragrances to follow later. Many designers held the title of Creative Director of Celine after Céline Vipiana's death in 1997, including Michael Kors, Roberto Menichetti, and Ivana Omazic but, it was Phoebe Philo who for a decade cemented the brand's cult following.

During the British fashion designer's time at Celine, rapper Kanye West infamously wore a womenswear blouse from the brand. Performing at Coachella in 2011, Mr. West hit the stage in a foulard print top from Celine SS 2011 women's ready-to-wear collection. On the runway, the blouse debuted in a pair of matching foulard print pants. The Donda 2 rapper sported the collection top half unbuttoned with jeans and gold chains. Rapper Travis Scott also wore the same blouse back in 2018 in a post on Instagram with jeans and Supreme x Comme Des Garçons Shirt x Nike Air Force Ones.

Following Philo's departure in December 2017, Hedi Slimane took the helm over the Celine, introduced menswear in 2019 with an updated 1960s Celine-inspired logo with a dropped french accent and rappers have quickly swapped their heavy monogram pieces for the sleek and elegant men's fashion offered from Celine. Check out how these eight rappers sport the brand's luxury menswear.
