Fans Are Calling Kendrick Lamar's Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers His "Yeezus" Album

Kendrick Lamar dropped his highly anticipated fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, and fans are comparing the body of work to Kanye West's Yeezus album.]

After a five-year break from producing an album, Kendrick is back with new music, following up 2017 offerings, the Pulitzer Prize-winning DAMN, with Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. Hip Hop fans have waited for this drop, and the hype only intensified when the Compton-born rapper announced the new album's title and released date back in April. Since DAMN, Kendrick was the executive producer on the Grammy and Academy Award-winning soundtrack,  Black Panther: The Album. He launched his media company pgLang with business partner Dave Free along with announcing his exit from west coast record label TDE. Lamar and his fiancée, Whitney Alford, also welcomed two children into their family, a girl in 2019 and a newborn who made their debut on the Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers album cover. But, the "HUMBLE" rapper has remained in terms of studio albums quiet until now.

Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers is an 18-track LP split into two sections. Tapping producers Sounwave, The Alchemist, Pharrell Williams, and features from Ghostface Killah, Summer Walker, and more, Kendricks's latest LP takes listeners on an intimate journey tackling topics like love and companionship, and sexual abuse and addiction. "No dependents, except for one, let me bring you closer/Intoxicated, there's a lustful nature that I failed to mention/Insecurities that I project, sleepin' with other women" Lamar raps on "Mother I Sober". In "Father Time," Kendrick explores his relationship with his father and how it's affected his mental health. "Daddy issues made me lеarn losses, I don't take those well Momma said, "That boy is exhausted," he said, "Go fuck yourself" If he give up now, that's gon' cost him, life's a bitch You could be a bitch or step out the margin, I got up quick." With the array of topics explored on tracks that draw inspiration from multiple genres of music, fans are comparing Kendrick Lamar's Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers to Kanye West's most exploratory album to date, Yeezus, released in 2013.
