Tobe Nwigwe Kills His First-Time Performance at Afropunk Brooklyn

The smell of weed, the smoke every spliff produced, and the occasional Spotted Lanternfly filled the air as the growing crowd gathered for Tobe Nwigwe's Afropunk Brooklyn performance. You could feel the anticipation of his arrival. As fans from Durand Benarr, the previous act on stage, walked away to refresh and refuel, more of us scurried closer to the front of the stage to fill those now abandoned spaces. You could see the live band double-checking their sound and background dancers lining up in the back, awaiting their cue, all dressed in head-to-toe mint green.

Tobe, his wife Martica "Fat" Nwigwe, and his children wore the same shade of green when they hit the stage. It was a lively performance from the Texas native, who shared it was his first time performing at Afropunk. Together with Fat, they performed one of his popular tracks, "Fye Fye." "She got a Scorpion too/And it'll sting you just like a scorpion do/If a demon get gregarious/My lil' Harriet don't do what accordions do (yuh)," they and the crowd rapped. He also did "Round Here (Part One,)" "Wide Links," and his Pharell Williams produced track "Lord Forgive Me," featuring the Louis Vuitton Menswear artistic director and hip-hop duo EarthGang. And as a surprise, one half of the Earthgang gang, Olu, joined Nwigwe on stage, shirtless in the same mint green with wings strapped to his back.
